At present, total storage capacities of Kolonnawa and Muthurajawela are 300,000m3 and 250,000m3 respectively. The overall storage is sufficient for around 27 days of country's requirement of petroleum products considering refinery production.

In order to cater the 30 day stocks requirement, storage has to be enhanced and the same has been discussed in the special report of Auditor General, Committee On Public Enterprises (COPE) and ministry meetings, as the core business of CPSTL is storage and distribution of petroleum products. 

For this purpose, the board of CPSTL had approved additional storage of 108,000m3 at Kolonnawa Installation. In the meantime, Auditor General has recommended by his report dated 28.08.2020 necessity of enhancing the storage capacity so that the fuel requirement of the country can be stored for several months considering the energy security of the country. He further recommended to carryout formal study on the future fuel requirement of the country.
