Establishment of a New Lanka Bulk Depot at Kankasanthurei (KKS)

In a major development for fuel distribution in the Northern Province, the Ceylon Petroleum Storage Terminals Limited (CPSTL) is nearing the completion of a Lanka Bulk Depot (LBD) in Kankasanthurei (KKS), and the opening ceremony will be scheduled on 08th June 2025. This new facility is set to significantly improve fuel storage and distribution efficiency across the Northern region.

Originally established in 1998 on land belonging to the Cement Corporation, the old KKS depot was maintained with limited infrastructure, restricting development and expansion due to the absence of land ownership. In response to the growing regional demand for petroleum products, CPSTL has secured a six-acre plot on a long-term lease to construct a new, fully equipped fuel Bulk Depot.

The new LBD comprises six fuel storage tanks with a total capacity of 525,000 liters, accommodating diesel, petrol, and kerosene.
In a forward-looking move to enhance logistics and reduce transportation costs, CPSTL also plans to rehabilitate the abandoned railway line between Maviddapuram Substation and the former KKS Cement Factory. The proposed extension of the railway line directly to the new depot will further bolster fuel supply efficiency. Additionally, CPSTL is planning to expand fuel storage capacity at the new location to meet future demand.
